SALISBURY, Md. – After more than a decade of dealing with wastewater treatment problems, city officials believe they have finally moved forward.
On Wednesday, Mayor Jake Day, members of the Eastern Shore Delegation and city officials celebrated finished upgrades at Salisbury’s wastewater treatment plant.
In years past, reports by the Environmental Integrity Project found that Salisbury’s plant was releasing higher levels of nutrients than they are supposed to into the Wicomico River.
The city has also faced violations after storing millions of gallons of sludge in a lagoon along with some sewage spills.
Upgrades at the plant include the use of ultra violet lights instead of chlorine as well as new filters.
“So, this was the upgrade we needed to do,” said Amanda Pollack, director of the Infrastructure & Development Department.
“We’re now meeting the highest levels of treatment in the state that are required, it’s enhanced nutrient removal, ENR levels, and this really does solve all of our problems,” said Pollack.
Officials say they will receive more than 250,000 dollars in grants in the coming years to maintain the treatment plant.
