EUGENE, Ore. — Residents in Eugene will soon be able to compost their food in their yard debris bins, instead of the garbage.
This comes on the heels of a pilot program that included 1,500 homes.
Eugene tosses 40 million pounds of food into the local landfill each year. Half of the food waste comes from homes.
Starting Oct. 1, anyone with residential garbage service can put plate scraps, meat, bones, dairy products and baked goods in their yard debris bin. Local processors will turn it into compost.
Officials in Seattle and Portland said they found the curbside collection doesn’t attract any more pests than regular garbage.
